The Minnesota Vikings face a crucial and complicated decision at quarterback this season, with potential options including Sam Darnold, JJ McCarthy, or perhaps an unexpected candidate. However, one aspect of the season that’s been slightly overshadowed is the future of Daniel Jones, the former Vikings and New York Giants quarterback.
Jones, who joined the Vikings late last season after being released by the Giants, saw his tenure in New York come to an end following the failure of his four-year, $160 million contract. This deal was originally signed after Jones’ sole playoff appearance and victory in 2022. Now, with the Steelers facing some uncertainty at quarterback, they could be an ideal landing spot for Jones.
Pittsburgh is likely to part ways with both Justin Fields and Russell Wilson this offseason, as both are headed for free agency. With the 21st pick in the upcoming draft, the Steelers are unlikely to land top QB prospects like Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders, who are expected to be selected in the top 10.
As a result, the Steelers will likely turn to free agency once again. While Aaron Rodgers has been mentioned as a potential acquisition, Jones could provide some valuable experience and security as a backup to the 41-year-old Rodgers, who is recovering from an Achilles injury.
During his time with the Giants, Jones experienced a largely inconsistent career, throwing for 14,82 yards, 70 touchdowns, and 47 interceptions over six years, with an average passer rating of 84.3 and a solid completion percentage of 64.1%.
While his stint in New York will be remembered as a disappointment, aside from his strong 2022 season, Jones could bring some stability to a Steelers quarterback room that looks uncertain heading into the 2025 season.

In a recent report, Steelers insider Andrew Fillipponi revealed that sources believe Pittsburgh could have interest in bringing the 27-year-old Jones to the team. According to Fillipponi, Jones could be a good fit for the Steelers’ offense and Mike Tomlin’s preference for a mobile quarterback.
