As expected, the Vikings have already reached an agreement to extend head coach Kevin O’Connell’s contract this offseason. General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, who has been with the team for three years, may also see his partnership with O’Connell continue beyond 2025.
Adofo-Mensah has one year left on his current deal, and teams typically seek to avoid leaving coaches and GMs in “lame-duck” situations. Just as O’Connell’s contract runs past this season, Adofo-Mensah’s extension could follow soon. The 43-year-old GM shared (via ESPN’s Kevin Seifert) that discussions with his agent and owners Zygi and Mark Wilf are ongoing.
“It’s probably on me that it’s not moving faster because I wake up every morning focused on what I need to do to get this team to where we want to go,” Adofo-Mensah said. “I know the Wilfs value me and what I bring to this organization, and I love it here. We’ve achieved a lot together.”
The Vikings have made a concerted shift to a younger roster over the past few years, and their impressive 14-3 record last season sets the stage for high expectations moving forward. While the quarterback situation remains uncertain with J.J. McCarthy missing his rookie year, the 2024 first-round pick is on track to take over next season (pending a potential veteran addition at the position). If Adofo-Mensah gets his new deal, he’ll play a major role in navigating this new chapter for the team at quarterback.
With three NFC North teams making the playoffs in 2024, the division is poised to remain one of the toughest in the NFL. Stability with the reigning Coach of the Year will be crucial, and it’s possible ownership will choose to solidify Adofo-Mensah’s position in the front office given his successful track record.
After the Vikings’ wild-card loss, which marked the second such defeat under the O’Connell-Adofo-Mensah era, it was confirmed that contract talks would take place for both. While one extension is already done, there’s still plenty of time left this offseason for the other to be finalized.
