DJ LeMahieu made an impressive return to competitive action Tuesday night, standing out in his first rehab game with Double-A Somerset. The veteran Yankees infielder, back from a left calf strain that sidelined him since March 1, doubled and homered in his first two at-bats.
Batting near the top of the lineup against Hartford, the 36-year-old ripped an opposite-field RBI double down the right-field line in the first inning, then followed it with a solo homer to center in the second. LeMahieu, who played second base, was taken out after five innings.
Manager Aaron Boone has noted that LeMahieu will likely need a longer rehab stint given the significant time missed during spring training. A three-time All-Star and former batting champion, LeMahieu hasn’t been fully healthy for an entire season since 2021.

His latest injury adds to a string of physical setbacks in recent years. In 2023, he fractured his right foot during spring training and was later sidelined with a hip issue, limiting him to just 67 games and a career-low .204 batting average. The year before, a toe injury kept him out of the postseason.
LeMahieu is currently in year five of a six-year, $90 million deal that runs through 2026. The Yankees are hoping he can bounce back and provide much-needed stability to an infield that’s already been hit hard by injuries this season.
