The Yankees are turning to one of their rising prospects following Clarke Schmidt’s injury setback.
According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, New York plans to call up 24-year-old right-hander Cam Schlittler to make his MLB debut on Tuesday or Wednesday against the Seattle Mariners.
Schmidt exited his most recent outing after just three innings due to elbow tightness, and after an MRI, he’s expected to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery.
Manager Aaron Boone said prior to Saturday’s game that the team was still evaluating rotation options, but it appears they’ve landed on the hard-throwing Massachusetts native.
While Schlittler struggled in his most recent outing, he’s been impressive overall this season, posting a 2.82 ERA and 1.21 WHIP across 15 appearances between Double-A Somerset and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Known for his ability to generate ground balls (career 47.8% groundball rate), Schlittler pairs a fastball that touches 97 mph with a developing sweeper, offering the Yankees a promising arm as they look to fill a major hole in the rotation.
