BREAKING-NEWS: Yankees Demote All-Star Offseason Acquisition After Consistent Disappointing Performance

The New York Yankees have seen enough of Devin Williams as their closer—at least for now.

Manager Aaron Boone told reporters on Sunday that Williams would be removed from the closer role, with reliever Luke Weaver likely stepping in to handle most of the ninth-inning duties moving forward. Boone emphasized that the change is “for right now,” suggesting that Williams could return to the role in the future if things improve.

This decision follows another disappointing performance by Williams on Friday against the Toronto Blue Jays. Coming into the game with a 2-1 lead in the ninth, Williams allowed three earned runs on two hits and a hit-by-pitch, failing to record an out as the Yankees lost 4-2.

Williams now sports a disastrous 11.25 ERA over 10 appearances this season. He’s also struggled with his control, issuing seven walks in 8.0 innings, and his strikeout rate has dropped to 9.0 K/9, far below his career average of 14.1 K/9.

The Yankees traded a significant package to acquire Williams—a two-time All-Star—from the Milwaukee Brewers during the offseason, including another former All-Star pitcher and some promising young talent. However, the return on that investment has been disappointing. The team likely hopes that a stint in lower-leverage situations will help Williams regain his confidence, but as of now, the trade is looking like a miss, especially considering the Yankees’ efforts to ease him into his role over recent months.
