The New York Yankees are likely to seek a starting pitcher this season due to injuries to Gerrit Cole, Clarke Schmidt, and Luis Gil. While the starting rotation hasn’t been a major issue so far, this could change once the offense slows down.
One pitcher frequently linked to the Yankees is Luis Castillo of the Seattle Mariners. Castillo has approximately $72 million remaining on his contract, along with a vesting option for 2028. Recently, Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller included Castillo in a list of the top trade targets for the season.
Miller noted, “Although the ship may have already sailed, the 32-year-old ace could still be available for trade this summer, especially if the offense struggles after a poor start, such as their eight-run total in the season-opening series against the Athletics.” Miller also pointed out the challenge of finding a trade partner who meets three conditions: A) needs a starting pitcher, B) can handle Castillo’s remaining contract, and C) has a surplus bat to offer the Mariners in return.
This could require a three-team deal. Castillo’s no-trade clause adds complexity to any potential deal, and his remaining salary is a significant consideration for any team acquiring him. The Yankees might be an ideal destination, provided Castillo is willing to accept a trade there.
New York could offer prospects like Spencer Jones or Everson Pereira to boost the Mariners’ offense, while also assuming the remainder of Castillo’s contract. It remains to be seen whether the Mariners will actively shop Castillo this season.
