The New York Yankees originally planned to rotate DJ LeMahieu and Oswaldo Cabrera at third base this season, but that strategy hit a snag when LeMahieu was injured during spring training. Meanwhile, Cabrera has shown he’s more effective as a utility player off the bench. To truly compete for a return to the World Series, the Yankees will need greater offensive output from the hot corner.
ESPN’s David Schoenfield listed the Yankees as a potential destination for St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado, noting several teams are facing similar struggles at the position. “Alec Bohm isn’t producing for the Phillies, the Cubs just sent Matt Shaw back down, the Blue Jays have gotten little from third base, and the Yankees’ third basemen have only hit one home run,” Schoenfield wrote. “If the Cardinals are willing to cover part of his salary, there’s a good chance they can move Arenado.”

Arenado, who signed an eight-year, $260 million contract with the Rockies in 2019 before being traded to St. Louis, was reportedly open to waiving his no-trade clause this past offseason. While the Dodgers are believed to be his top choice, he might consider the Yankees if Los Angeles doesn’t pursue him.
With a 9–14 record, the Cardinals could be approaching a rebuild and may look to cut payroll by the trade deadline. Trading Arenado would not only ease financial pressure but also bring back valuable young talent. So far this season, the eight-time All-Star is hitting .288 with a .395 on-base percentage and .452 slugging percentage, along with two home runs and 10 RBIs. If acquired, he could be a major boost for a Yankees team aiming to repeat as American League champions.
