The New York Yankees are cautiously optimistic about Giancarlo Stanton returning sometime this summer as he deals with ongoing elbow issues. While Stanton has been a strong postseason performer in the past, his inability to stay healthy makes it hard for the team to rely on him.
According to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, manager Aaron Boone recently stated there’s no timetable for Stanton’s return, and he hasn’t begun a rehab assignment yet.
Roster Complications Ahead
When Stanton does return, the Yankees will face some tough decisions. Rookie Ben Rice has exceeded expectations this season, hitting nine home runs with a .252 average while playing multiple positions. Taking him out of the lineup would be a step backward, especially considering how valuable his bat has been.
With Jasson Domínguez in the mix and Trent Grisham unexpectedly forcing his way into regular playing time, the Yankees are already facing a roster crunch—even without Stanton.
Though the designated hitter role could be an option, it’s often occupied by either Paul Goldschmidt or Ben Rice, depending on who’s playing first base. Fitting Stanton in as a full-time DH might mean benching one of them, or shifting Rice to a new position—neither of which is ideal.
At 35, Stanton likely won’t be used much in the outfield, and it’s unclear who he could realistically replace. His offensive upside remains undeniable—he hit 27 home runs with a 116 OPS+ in 114 games last season—but given his injury history and the emergence of younger talent, there’s no easy solution.
As Zachary Rotman noted, “The Yankees would love to add Stanton’s bat, but making it work is another story.”
