The New York Yankees have undergone significant roster changes since making the World Series last year, but it may not be enough to guarantee another trip to the Fall Classic. With the team’s championship-or-bust mentality, the Yankees are almost certain to look for ways to strengthen their roster before the trade deadline.
One glaring area that has been a problem since before opening day is third base. After losing long-time second baseman Gleyber Torres in free agency, the Yankees began the season with Jazz Chisholm Jr. at second and a rotating group of utility players filling in at third base.
Though veteran DJ LeMahieu has been added to the mix, the Yankees lost their primary third baseman, Oswaldo Cabrera, to a serious ankle injury that could keep him out for the rest of the season. Now, with an even larger hole at third base, fans are expecting the Yankees to target a major trade, such as pursuing Nolan Arenado.
At a recent charity event, Yankees GM Brian Cashman offered a vague response when asked about the possibility of making a trade following Cabrera’s injury. “It’s hard to make improvements at this part of the season,” Cashman said regarding a potential external addition, as reported by the New York Post. “We’ve got what we’ve got.
We’ll assess it and move forward with opportunities as they present themselves at whatever positions they do.” Cashman’s reluctance to offer more details might stem from the desire not to give potential trade partners an advantage.
However, his acknowledgment that making a move now is challenging holds true, as any trade is more likely to be completed closer to the midseason deadline. As the Yankees continue their push for another World Series appearance, fans can still hope for an upgrade, even if Cashman is keeping the specifics under wraps.
