As the start of spring training approaches, the New York Yankees are still looking to strengthen their infield, and time is running out to make a move. While Alex Bregman remains available, reports suggest that he has his sights set on the Boston Red Sox as his preferred destination. In response, the Yankees may pivot toward another infield option from the American League West, and one potential target is Luis Rengifo of the Los Angeles Angels. Over the past three seasons, Rengifo has significantly improved after a slow start to his career, making him a prime candidate for the Yankees’ needs.
In 2024, Rengifo hit an impressive .300 in 283 at-bats, contributing six home runs and 30 RBI. His performance has been steadily growing, with solid seasons in 2022 and 2023, where he hit .264 with around 16-17 home runs and 50+ RBI in each of those years. Defensively, Rengifo brings valuable versatility, as he has played all three infield positions: second base, shortstop, and third base. Given that second and third base are areas where the Yankees could use an upgrade, Rengifo could be a perfect fit for the team.
If the Yankees were to trade for Rengifo, the deal could look something like this: the Yankees would send left-handed pitcher Brock Selvidge (ranked No. 7 in their farm system), infielder Jorbit Vivas (ranked No. 17), and right-handed pitcher Yoendrys Gómez (ranked No. 20) to the Angels in exchange for Rengifo. The key factor here is that the Yankees would plan to extend Rengifo beyond his current contract to prevent him from hitting free agency, which would justify a larger-than-usual trade package for a player in his final year of arbitration.
For the Angels, this trade would bring them a promising trio of young talent. Selvidge and Gómez are both pitchers who would likely report to Triple-A, with Gómez potentially making his major league debut in late 2025. Vivas, a versatile infielder, would also report to Triple-A with the chance to make his MLB debut later in the year. In exchange, the Yankees would acquire a durable and adaptable infielder who could immediately contribute at multiple positions while providing a reliable bat.
Currently, Rengifo’s market value is estimated at $15 million per year, a figure the Yankees can afford as they look to bolster their infield for the future. This potential move could provide the Yankees with the kind of flexibility and depth they need to compete, while simultaneously securing a key player for the long term. As the spring training deadline looms, it remains to be seen if this trade will come to fruition, but it’s clear that the Yankees are exploring all options to improve their roster.
