Breaking-News: Yankees Sign Surprising Lefty Spring Sensation to MiLB Deal – Here’s What You Need to Know!

Dom Smith is returning to the New York Yankees after the team announced on Monday that they have re-signed the infielder to a minor league deal.

Smith Returns to Yankees on Minor League Contract
Smith impressed during Spring Training, hitting three home runs, driving in 12 RBIs, and maintaining a .297 batting average. After opting out of his previous contract when he was not included on the Opening Day roster, he is now back with the Yankees and could be called up if an injury creates an opening.

The 29-year-old has eight years of MLB experience, six of which were spent with the New York Mets. Last season, Smith played for the Boston Red Sox and Cincinnati Reds, hitting .233 with six home runs and 34 RBIs in 93 games.

Yankees’ Depth at First Base and DH
The Yankees currently have a strong lineup with Paul Goldschmidt, Ben Rice, and Cody Bellinger all capable of playing first base, Smith’s primary position. With Giancarlo Stanton on the injured list, Rice has taken over as the main designated hitter (DH).

However, since both Smith and Rice are left-handed hitters, it may be difficult for Smith to get DH reps if Rice is not playing. Yankees manager Aaron Boone has mixed up the lineup to create favorable matchups against left-handed pitchers early in the season.

While it seems unlikely that Smith will see significant playing time on the major league roster right now, his signing adds valuable depth to the team in case his services are required.

The Yankees just completed a sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers, setting a new MLB record for most home runs hit by a team in the first three games of a season with 15 homers. Up next, they face the Arizona Diamondbacks in a three-game series starting Tuesday.
