Breaking news:Proceed with Diversity Summit Even After NFL Cancels “Accelerator” Program for May 2025

  1. As the NFL navigates an increasingly fraught political landscape, the Minnesota Vikings are forging ahead with their diversity efforts—unapologetically and undeterred.

While the league quietly scrapped its annual “accelerator” program scheduled for the May 2025 owners meetings—a move it later framed as a postponement—the Vikings hosted their fourth annual diversity summit in June, signaling a firm commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) at a time when such initiatives face mounting political pressure nationwide.

Assistant head coach Mike Pettine led the three-day event, which aims to expand access to entry-level NFL jobs and foster professional networking among underrepresented groups. “There was never any doubt” about continuing the program, Pettine said.

According to Minneapolis Star Tribune reporter Andrew Krammer, the summit remains a cornerstone of the Vikings’ off-field mission, even as DEI efforts are rolled back in other corners of corporate and civic life.

The NFL’s decision to cancel the May accelerator drew quiet scrutiny. Though it was announced only a week before the event, Commissioner Roger Goodell insisted it was not a cancellation but a rescheduling for 2026. “We are very focused on continuing our efforts in this area,” Goodell told reporters at the spring meetings. “We believe it’s been helpful in identifying talent and helping great talent develop.”

Still, the optics are difficult to ignore. With DEI under sustained political attack, the league’s decision appeared to some as a retreat—despite Goodell’s assurances to the contrary.

In contrast, the Vikings’ resolve stands out. In an era where many organizations are scaling back DEI efforts in response to political pressure, Minnesota is staying the course. Their continued investment in inclusivity sends a clear message: commitment to progress doesn’t waver with the political winds.
