According to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the San Francisco 49ers are adding kicker Anders Carlson to their practice squad. This move comes as a precaution in case Matthew Wright, who was signed just a week ago, is unable to play due to a shoulder injury.
Carlson was selected in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers. Last season, he successfully converted 27 of 33 field goal attempts, although he struggled from 40 to 49 yards, making only 50% of those kicks. He did convert three out of five attempts from over 50 yards and missed five of his 39 extra-point attempts.
Notably, Carlson missed a critical 41-yard field goal in the fourth quarter of last year’s NFC Divisional playoff against the 49ers, which would have given the Packers a seven-point lead with just over six minutes remaining. His miss allowed San Francisco to score the game-winning touchdown and advance in the playoffs.
Further updates on Wright’s injury are expected on Wednesday when head coach Kyle Shanahan addresses the media, as players have the day off on Tuesday.
