The Texas Rangers have been on a tear in July, improving their record to 56-52 and pulling within just one game of the final American League Wild Card spot. They’ve also closed the gap to five games behind the Houston Astros in the AL West.
With the trade deadline fast approaching, the Rangers are expected to be active, especially in addressing their biggest need — bullpen reinforcements.
According to Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report, the Rangers are predicted to make a major move by acquiring standout relievers Ryan Helsley and Phil Maton from the St. Louis Cardinals in a blockbuster trade.
On paper, Texas already boasts one of the league’s top bullpens, holding a 3.25 ERA — second only to the Padres. However, they’ve struggled to close games consistently, converting just 27 of 45 save opportunities, making late-inning help a clear priority.
Reuter suggests Helsley (36 appearances, 21 saves, 3.00 ERA, 10.3 K/9) and Maton (40 games, 20 holds, 2.35 ERA, 11.3 K/9) could provide a major boost, joining arms like Robert Garcia, Shawn Armstrong, and Hoby Milner to solidify the back end of the bullpen.
The Cardinals are reportedly asking for a significant return, but with the Rangers’ deep farm system, they may be willing to part with top prospects to shore up their roster for a playoff push.
While Texas continues to heat up, St. Louis appears to be shifting into seller mode, making this potential trade a key storyline to watch as the deadline approaches.
