Report: Reds Exploring Reunion with Power-Hitting Infielder Eugenio Suárez
Could a fan-favorite be making his way back to Cincinnati? According to The Athletic’s C. Trent Rosecrans, there’s “mutual interest” between the Reds and Diamondbacks in a potential trade that would bring third baseman Eugenio Suárez back to the Queen City—where he starred for seven seasons.
Suárez is in the middle of a resurgent season, currently leading MLB with 86 RBI and topping the National League with 36 home runs. With the Reds still in the playoff hunt in the NL Central, bolstering their lineup could be a key move ahead of the trade deadline. Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks—sitting on the postseason bubble—are expected to be sellers, and Suárez has become a prominent name in trade rumors. On paper, the fit seems logical for both teams.
In terms of potential return, Rosecrans notes the Reds are unlikely to part with top pitching prospects Chase Burns or Rhett Lowder. However, right-hander Chase Petty—who has struggled in both the majors and Triple-A—might be on the table. A change of scenery could benefit the 22-year-old.
Another possibility? Packaging a few of the Reds’ numerous minor league infielders. With Elly De La Cruz locked in as the team’s franchise shortstop, Cincinnati has some depth to deal from in that area.
That said, it may not be a sure thing. MLB Network’s Mark Feinsand reported later Wednesday that although discussions have taken place, a deal for Suárez is considered a “long shot” for now.
A Familiar Face
Suárez originally joined the Reds via trade from Detroit before the 2015 season and quickly became a mainstay. He made the All-Star team in 2018 and launched a career-best 49 home runs in 2019. Cincinnati dealt him to Seattle before the 2022 season, and he was later traded to Arizona in 2023. Despite all the movement, Suárez is still under the original seven-year contract (plus team option) he signed with the Reds back in 2018.
What’s Next?
While other contenders like the Yankees and Cubs have shown interest in Suárez, a return to Cincinnati would carry special meaning for Reds fans. The team currently sits third in the NL Central at 53–50, just 2.5 games back of a wild card spot under first-year manager Terry Francona. With Arizona a few games behind and leaning toward selling, the window is open—however briefly—for a potential Reds-Suárez reunion.
