BREAKING: Surprise Comeback? Rangers Slugger Officially Returning Next Week

ARLINGTON — Earlier this week, injured Rangers designated hitter Joc Pederson began a rehab assignment with Double-A Frisco in Omaha. On Thursday, he played in a live game for the first time since May, serving as the designated hitter. On Friday, he shifted to first base as he continued his comeback.

Through two rehab games, signs are encouraging for the two-time World Series champ, whom the Rangers are eyeing for a potential return during next week’s West Coast trip to face the Angels and Mariners. Asked if Pederson is on track to rejoin the team, manager Bruce Bochy said, “He’s doing well,” and confirmed he watched all of Pederson’s at-bats Thursday.

Pederson went 2-for-3 with two doubles, a walk, a strikeout, and a run scored in Thursday’s game. He went 0-for-3 on Friday in a rain-shortened five-inning game.

Pederson has been out since May 25 with a fractured right hand, suffered after being hit by a pitch the night before against the White Sox. Though he initially stayed in the game and scored, further tests confirmed the injury, with doctors setting a 4–6 week recovery timeline.

Before landing on the IL, Pederson had been one of the Rangers’ most notable offensive struggles. In 46 games, he hit just .131 with a .269 OBP and .238 slugging percentage, tallying two home runs and six RBI. At one point, he set a franchise record by going hitless in 41 consecutive at-bats — a mark that has since been surpassed.

Despite his absence, the Rangers’ offense has improved, ranking fifth in MLB in runs scored since June 1. If Pederson can regain form upon his return, it could further strengthen the lineup as Texas pushes to stay in the playoff mix.
