BREAKING; Tennessee Star James Pearce SNUBBED in Latest NFL Mock Draft – What’s Behind His Shocking Slide?

Tennessee’s standout edge rusher, James Pearce Jr., was notably absent from the latest first-round NFL mock draft, despite a strong showing at the NFL Combine last week. Pearce clocked an impressive 4.47-second 40-yard dash, recorded a 31-inch vertical jump, and broad-jumped 10 feet 3 inches. While many expected his combine performance to solidify his status as a late first-round pick, CBS’ Ryan Wilson’s updated mock draft excluded him entirely, instead featuring players like Marshall’s Mike Green, Texas A&M’s Shemar Stewart, and Georgia’s Jalon Walker and Mykel Williams.

Pearce entered the 2023 college football season as one of the nation’s top prospects, but that hype hasn’t carried over to his NFL draft projections. Vols on SI spoke with several NFL general managers in Indianapolis to understand why Pearce’s stock seems to be slipping.

“He doesn’t use his hands effectively to fight off blockers,” one source explained. “You see the physical traits—his build, arm length, and athleticism—but he’s relying too much on those alone.” Concerns were also raised about his instincts in the run game. “He struggles to recognize pulling blockers, close gaps, and defeat blocks in run defense,” another source added.

While the drop in draft stock could cost Pearce financially, one source noted a silver lining: “If I were his team, I’d be disappointed about the potential loss of money, but I’d be happy knowing he’s going to a place where he can develop into a long and successful NFL career.”

On the other hand, one NFL GM expressed optimism about Pearce’s combine performance and character. “His workout and interviews were really impressive. He’s a terrific young man and an undeniable athlete. For teams picking late in the first round, he definitely has a chance to go there. He’s got room to grow, and the character to make it happen,” the GM told Vols on SI exclusively.

Despite the mixed reviews, Pearce’s combine performance and potential for growth could still make him an intriguing prospect for teams willing to invest in his development.
