As of late January, uncertainty around Sam Darnold’s potential contract value—spanning a broad financial range—leaves some doubt about how aggressively the Minnesota Vikings will pursue re-signing him this offseason.
Minnesota holds leverage with rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy, the 2024 No. 10 overall pick, and a proven offensive system under head coach Kevin O’Connell. This framework could entice experienced veterans to compete for the starting role or serve as McCarthy’s backup if Darnold departs.
Darnold’s free agency prospects are further strengthened by a thin quarterback market and multiple teams in need of a starter. ESPN’s Benjamin Solak identified the Raiders, Steelers, and Giants as likely contenders for Darnold. The Titans (picking No. 1 overall) and Browns (No. 2) could also enter the mix if they opt against drafting a QB or trading back. However, Cleveland’s commitment to Deshaun Watson—still owed two years on his fully guaranteed $230 million deal—makes them a less probable destination. Tennessee, with no such financial anchor, appears far more plausible as a suitor.
