Free agent reliever Brooks Raley, who is currently recovering from Tommy John surgery, has reportedly been in discussions with several teams about potential multiyear contracts. According to Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic, the left-handed pitcher is drawing interest from high-profile clubs, including the New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs.
Raley, who joined the New York Mets in December 2022, underwent Tommy John surgery in May, sidelining him for much of the 2024 season. Prior to his injury, Raley made eight appearances for the Mets, but his season was cut short after he was placed on the injured list. New York had exercised his $6.5 million option for 2024, signaling their commitment to him, but unfortunately, the injury put a halt to his contributions.
The Mets had acquired Raley from the Tampa Bay Rays in a trade before the 2023 season, where he proved to be a solid addition to their bullpen. Over 66 appearances in 2023, Raley posted an impressive 2.80 ERA with 61 strikeouts and three saves across 54 2/3 innings. His performance with the Mets showcased his ability to be a reliable asset, making him an attractive option for teams seeking bullpen depth in 2024 and beyond.
Raley first made his major-league debut with the Cubs back in 2012, giving him a long-standing connection to the franchise. This history with the Cubs, combined with his recent success, could make for an interesting reunion, with Chicago reportedly showing interest in bringing him back into the fold. As Raley continues his recovery, several teams are clearly keeping a close eye on his progress, hoping to secure his services for the upcoming seasons.
