The New York Yankees have had a whirlwind couple of months. Initially entering the offseason as the frontrunners to re-sign superstar outfielder Juan Soto, the Yankees were stunned when their crosstown rivals, the New York Mets, outbid them in a fierce competition.
However, the Bronx Bombers quickly regrouped, making a series of significant moves. First, they handed Atlanta Braves All-Star Max Fried the largest contract ever given to a left-handed pitcher. They followed that up by trading for ace closer Devin Williams and former NL MVP Cody Bellinger. They then managed to acquire future Hall of Famer Paul Goldschmidt at a discounted rate.
Now, the big question remains: are the Yankees done making moves, or is there one more major deal on the horizon? In recent weeks, the Yankees have been linked to potential upgrades at third base. But according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, the team could still be eyeing a move for Baltimore Orioles slugger Anthony Santander.
Santander is coming off a career year, hitting 44 home runs, several of which came against the Yankees. He would be a massive boost to the Yankees’ lineup. However, if the team signs him, what does that mean for top outfield prospect Jasson Dominguez? Could the Yankees be considering a trade involving the 21-year-old Dominguez this offseason?
Dominguez has been considered one of the Yankees’ top prospects for years and is still ranked as their No. 1 prospect by MLB.com. He has long been viewed as one of the organization’s untouchables. However, a potential Santander signing would fill the left-field spot Dominguez was expected to occupy next season. With Giancarlo Stanton still on the roster, a DH role for Santander would also be off the table. This raises the question: could the Yankees actually be contemplating a trade for “The Martian”?
Dominguez has played 26 games in the MLB, posting a .207 batting average, .310 on-base percentage, .437 slugging percentage, .747 OPS, 6 home runs, 11 RBIs, and 14 runs scored. While his future in the Yankees’ lineup once seemed secure, the team now faces a short window to compete for championships in the coming seasons. Dominguez could become a key piece in a trade for a game-changing starting pitcher, like Seattle’s Luis Castillo or San Diego’s Dylan Cease.
A move for Santander, along with the addition of a top-tier arm, could propel the Yankees into World Series contention for 2025, making them clear favorites to win it all.
