The New York Yankees faced another setback on Monday as they received more troubling injury news. MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch reported that Luis Gil, the reigning American League Rookie of the Year, has been diagnosed with a high-grade right lat strain. The injury will sideline him for at least six weeks, leaving the Yankees’ rotation depth in question early in the season. Manager Aaron Boone confirmed the diagnosis after Gil underwent an MRI on Saturday, following an abrupt end to a bullpen session after just five pitches. Given the severity of the injury, the earliest Gil could return to the mound is likely June.

With Gil out, the Yankees will turn to Marcus Stroman to fill the rotation spot. However, tensions between Stroman and the team reportedly remain high after the Yankees explored trading him this offseason. If the team is determined to keep Stroman out of the mix, they could look to acquire another starter via trade. FanSided’s Rucker Haringey suggested the Yankees could target Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Jordan Montgomery.

Montgomery, who signed a one-year, $25 million deal with the Diamondbacks after winning the World Series with the Texas Rangers in 2023, struggled last season, posting a 6.23 ERA in 25 games. Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick openly criticized the signing during an appearance on “The Burnes & Gambo Show,” calling it a “horrible decision” and the team’s “biggest mistake” of the season. Montgomery exercised a $22.5 million player option after his disappointing performance, but Kendrick’s comments suggest the Diamondbacks are open to moving him, potentially even absorbing some of his salary to facilitate a trade.

For the Yankees, Montgomery could represent a low-cost addition with the potential for a bounce-back season. Prior to his struggles in Arizona, he was a reliable starter, posting a 3.20 ERA in 32 games during the 2023 season and a 3.48 ERA across 94 starts from 2021 to 2023. Montgomery began his MLB career with the Yankees, and while his 2024 struggles mirrored his early career challenges, a return to New York could provide the fresh start he needs. Additionally, acquiring Montgomery could give the Yankees an opportunity to finally move Stroman, addressing both their rotation needs and clubhouse dynamics.
