Brendan Beck’s journey in the Yankees’ organization has proven that early assessments of his career were overly premature. A second-round pick in 2021, Beck was initially seen as a promising prospect with a bright future. The Yankees were excited about his potential, especially after he completed a solid college career as a four-year starter at Stanford, where he posted a 22-10 record, a 3.11 ERA, and 289 strikeouts in 289.1 innings.
Damon Oppenheimer, the Yankees’ vice president of amateur scouting, was enthusiastic about Beck’s future, believing he was close to being MLB-ready and requiring only minimal development. Beck was seen as a polished, athletic pitcher with impressive command over four pitches, including an above-average changeup and a low-80s slider.
However, Beck’s rise to the big leagues has not been as fast as initially expected. While his scouting report was glowing, indicating he could eventually become a back-of-the-rotation starter with upside, his progression has been slower than anticipated. The hope for Beck to make an immediate impact has been delayed, but the potential remains, even if it takes longer to fully realize.
