On Thursday, the Pittsburgh Pirates fired manager Derek Shelton after five seasons and a 307–441 record, never reaching the playoffs. That decision has sparked speculation about whether Yankees manager Aaron Boone could be next. At first glance, it seems unlikely—Boone has guided the Yankees to 625 wins and just 446 losses over eight seasons, with only one missed postseason in 2023. After finally reaching the World Series in 2024 and currently leading the AL East with a 22–17 record, Boone’s job would seem secure.
But not all fans are convinced. Despite his success in the regular season, Boone has yet to deliver a World Series title, something that’s expected in the Bronx. Yankees blogger Mark Powell recently argued Boone is “on the hot seat” and blamed him for a loss to the Rays, saying he still makes rookie-level mistakes despite years of experience.
Boone’s name even appeared on Bleacher Report’s list of MLB managers on the hot seat, alongside World Series winner Brian Snitker of the Braves. Boone, however, has the pressure of leading a franchise with 27 championships—the most in MLB history. Notably, Boone has now managed the Yankees longer than any other skipper since Babe Ruth’s era without winning a title, surpassing even Ralph Houk’s championship-free second stint.
Criticism of Boone has intensified online. Blogger Robert Casey of Bleeding Yankee Blue slammed Boone for what he sees as poor leadership, questionable decisions, and dishonesty with fans. He accused Boone of using young players as scapegoats and said it’s time for the front office to take action. Until the Yankees bring in a more capable manager, Casey warned, fans will continue to call Boone out.
