The Toronto Blue Jays may struggle to secure a contract extension with their star first baseman, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., whose deal expires after the 2025 season.
With Juan Soto’s recent $800 million contract setting the bar, it seems unlikely that Guerrero will sign an extension with the Blue Jays. If Guerrero isn’t interested in re-signing, Toronto could consider trading him.
Christopher Kline of FanSided recently compiled a list of the top five teams that might pursue the Blue Jays’ slugger, and surprisingly, he ranked the New York Yankees second.
Kline noted the irony of this possibility, pointing out that Guerrero once said he wanted to “kill” the Yankees and would never play for them due to a family feud, a sentiment he expressed just over a year ago. However, Guerrero seems to have softened his stance, possibly anticipating such a situation.
Kline explains that the Yankees are eager to replace Soto’s bat and surround Aaron Judge with more star power. Like Soto, Guerrero is young and accomplished, making him a prime target for New York.
Despite the Yankees’ interest, a trade for Guerrero is highly unlikely. For one, the Blue Jays would be unwilling to trade their young superstar to a hated rival like the Yankees.
Even if they were open to the idea, New York lacks the necessary prospects to make the deal happen. While the Yankees might have a shot at signing Guerrero as a free agent next winter, a trade is simply not in the cards for now.
