These days, any positive update on a New York Yankees starting pitcher is a reason to celebrate, especially when it doesn’t involve any season-ending injuries.
According to SNY-TV, Yankees manager Aaron Boone shared with reporters before Friday’s game against Pittsburgh that Luis Gil is set to begin a throwing program within the next 7-10 days. Although Gil is still expected to make his 2025 debut later in the summer, this marks an important step forward in his recovery process.

The 26-year-old right-hander was shut down in early March due to a high-grade lat strain, with an initial prognosis of at least three months on the shelf. While Boone’s update doesn’t change the timeline for Gil’s return just yet, the fact that he’ll start throwing again in about a week is a promising sign that he’ll be back on the mound as planned this summer.
Gil showed flashes of his potential in 2021, posting a 3.07 ERA with 38 strikeouts in 29.1 innings over six starts. However, after one start in 2022, he underwent Tommy John surgery in May and missed most of the 2023 season, only making two rehab appearances.
Last year, Gil went 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA in 29 starts, striking out 171 batters in 152.2 innings. He also won the American League Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year Award, edging out Colton Cowser of the Baltimore Orioles by just five points in one of the closest votes since the BBWAA expanded the voting to three players in 1980.
