The New York Yankees are already facing the 2025 season without star slugger Giancarlo Stanton, and now manager Aaron Boone has another injury concern to address. Reigning American League Rookie of the Year Luis Gil is scheduled for an MRI on Saturday after experiencing shoulder tightness during a bullpen session on Friday. Gil cut his session short after just a few pitches, unable to fully extend due to discomfort in his upper arm and shoulder area. Boone acknowledged the situation, stating, “It feels like it’s going to cost us some time.”

The severity of Gil’s injury remains unclear, but the Yankees may opt to proceed cautiously with the 26-year-old right-hander. After throwing a career-high 151.2 innings in 2024—a significant jump from his previous professional high of under 100 innings—Gil’s workload could be a contributing factor. Fans are hopeful the issue isn’t serious, especially given the Yankees’ reliance on their pitching staff this season. With Juan Soto’s departure, the lineup has taken a hit, leaving Aaron Judge as the only consistent power threat. The team’s 2025 success hinges heavily on its rotation, and Gil was expected to play a key role.
Young pitchers often face nagging injuries after a sharp increase in innings, and Gil’s limited workload from 2022 to 2023 (just 29.2 innings combined) makes this situation even more concerning. If Gil is sidelined, the Yankees may turn to Marcus Stroman, who was the subject of trade rumors this offseason. Stroman, who struggled in the second half of 2024 after a strong start (5-2, 2.60 ERA in his first 12 outings; 3-5, 5.67 ERA in his last 12), could step into the rotation alongside ace Gerrit Cole and newcomer Max Fried. Carlos Rodón and Clarke Schmidt round out a deep and talented staff, ensuring the Yankees’ rotation remains formidable even without Gil.
While losing Gil would be a setback, the Yankees’ pitching depth should help them weather the storm. With Cole and Fried leading the way, and Stroman, Rodón, and Schmidt providing stability, the team remains well-positioned to compete in 2025. However, all eyes will be on Gil’s MRI results to determine the next steps for the young star.
