Seattle Seahawks cornerback Josh Jobe is seizing his opportunities.
Over the past two weeks, Jobe has made a significant impact, delivering strong performances in his first two games after starting the season on the practice squad. He now has a chance to move up the depth chart, as coach Mike McDonald noted that the third cornerback position is competitive, especially with starter Tre Brown returning from an ankle injury. Although Brown was active against Buffalo, he did not play.
Riq Woolen and Devon Witherspoon are the team’s top two cornerbacks.
“Jobe is stacking a lot of great practice reps and starting to flash,” Macdonald said. “If you want to play, that’s how it works. Gaining momentum and consistency builds trust with the coaching staff and teammates.” Jobe, who won a national championship with Alabama in 2020 and excelled on special teams during his first two NFL seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, recorded six tackles and two passes defended in his Seahawks debut against Atlanta on October 20. He followed that up with seven tackles and an interception of Josh Allen against the Bills last Sunday, marking the first interception of his professional career and breaking Allen’s streak of 301 pass attempts without a pick.
“That interception was huge for me, my first career one, and I was really excited,” Jobe said. “Josh Allen is a great quarterback, but I played perfect technique, knew what to expect, and it worked out well for me.”
Jobe’s start hasn’t been flawless; the Bills targeted him, resulting in a 35-yard catch by Khalil Shakir. Still, he has shown enough to earn his spot on the field.
“When guys get their chance, they shine,” linebacker Tyrel Dodson commented. “Jobe is doing a great job of maximizing his opportunities right now.”
After being released by the Eagles in August, Jobe signed with the Seahawks’ practice squad on August 29. His impressive practice performance led to his opportunity to play when Brown was unable to go against Atlanta. “Our offensive players noticed his quality play on tape,” McDonald said. “When you take advantage of your opportunities, it makes the team better, and we’ll look for ways to keep you on the field.”
Macdonald mentioned that the decision on who will start against the Los Angeles Rams—Brown, Jobe, or rookie Nehemiah Pritchett—will likely be made by Friday based on practice performance. “All three guys are very capable,” Macdonald noted, adding that Nehemiah is next in line.
Despite his recent success, Jobe feels he still has more to prove. As an undrafted player who spent time on the practice squad, he knows nothing is guaranteed.
“I’m honored to be in this position,” Jobe said. “I’m here to work every day. This is a job, and every day is an interview for me, so I just have to keep competing and making plays. That’s my main goal.”
