After pitching four scoreless innings for Double-A Somerset on Thursday night, Clarke Schmidt is expected to rejoin the Yankees’ starting rotation next week. He gave up just three hits, struck out four batters, and looked sharp, throwing 61 pitches—45 of them for strikes. It was exactly the performance the Yankees were hoping for. Now, however, comes the challenge of finding space for him in the rotation.
According to Brendan Kuty of The Athletic, rookie right-hander Will Warren is the most likely candidate to be sent down. While Warren has shown potential, he still has minor-league options remaining, which makes him the easiest roster move. On the other hand, veteran Carlos Carrasco, who has struggled more but brings experience, can refuse a demotion and would likely do so. For now, the Yankees seem to be favoring consistency.
This decision goes beyond just recent performance. With the rotation already short-handed—Gerrit Cole is out for the year after Tommy John surgery, and Luis Gil is sidelined for a few more months with a lat strain—the Yankees are trying to preserve as much pitching depth as possible.
While Warren may be a more promising long-term option, keeping Carrasco buys the team time. Kuty notes that things could change again when Gil returns. He’s reportedly ahead of schedule but unlikely to be back before May.
In the meantime, the Yankees are piecing together their rotation while GM Brian Cashman looks for reinforcements. Schmidt’s return brings some much-needed reliability. Looking ahead, the Yankees are also monitoring their top minor-league pitchers, including rising Double-A prospect Cam Schlittler, who might be an option later in the summer.
