The Cincinnati Reds announced a series of roster moves ahead of their home opener against the Tampa Bay Rays at Great American Ball Park. Right-handed reliever Luis Mey has been recalled from Triple-A Louisville, taking the place of Scott Barlow, who is currently on paternity leave.
Mey was with the Reds throughout May and impressed early, allowing just four hits and two runs across 10 innings while recording 13 strikeouts and five walks. However, a rough final week—where he gave up four runs and two home runs in just three innings—led to his demotion back to Triple-A.
He had a short stint with the Reds again on June 19 against the Twins, where he struggled, walking three and giving up a run in 1.1 innings.
Since returning to Louisville, Mey has rebounded, posting a 2.20 ERA over 16.1 innings. In that time, he’s held opposing hitters to nine hits with no home runs, issuing eight walks and striking out 18 batters—good for a 28% strikeout rate over 64 batters faced.
Consistency remains Mey’s main hurdle, particularly when it comes to command. He’s shown flashes of dominance, but occasional control issues have led to costly outings. When he’s locked in, though, he can be extremely difficult to hit.
