HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (CNN/FOX) — Former Minnesota Vikings player Chris Kluwe was arrested during a Huntington Beach city council meeting on Tuesday after protesting a controversial plaque featuring the acronym “MAGA.” Kluwe, who spoke out against the plaque, urged other officials to “start engaging in civil disobedience” to challenge decisions they believe are harmful or divisive.
The plaque, intended to commemorate the city library’s 50th anniversary, includes the words “Magical,” “Alluring,” “Galvanizing,” and “Adventurous,” alongside the phrase “Making America Great Again.” Kluwe argued that the plaque is politically charged and inappropriate for a library, which he described as a neutral space meant to serve the entire community.
Police removed Kluwe from the meeting, and he reported being detained for four hours. Despite his protest, the city council voted unanimously to approve the plaque.
Kluwe, a former NFL punter, has been vocal about social and political issues since his playing career ended. His arrest has sparked discussions about the role of public spaces in fostering inclusivity and neutrality.
