INDIANAPOLIS – When discussing Ole Miss defensive lineman JJ Pegues, his versatility is impossible to ignore. Pegues began his college career as a tight end at Auburn, transitioned to the defensive line, and even took on a role as a running back in Ole Miss’ jumbo package last season, rushing 21 times for 69 yards and seven touchdowns. His high school experience as a wildcat quarterback further highlights his adaptability. However, amidst the focus on his multifaceted skill set, it’s important to remember that Pegues is also a talented defensive lineman with significant potential for growth.
In 2024, Pegues earned first-team All-SEC honors as a defensive tackle, recording 42 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks. Speaking at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, Pegues credited his switch to defense to Nick Eason, a former Steelers defensive lineman (2007-2010) who coached Auburn’s defensive line during Pegues’ time there.
“Nick Eason saw something in me and believed I could excel on the defensive line,” Pegues said. “Having played offense my whole life, I understood offensive cues, quarterback checks, and other nuances, which gave me an edge. I always knew I’d end up on defense—I just didn’t know when. I’m glad it happened during my sophomore year.”
Eason helped simplify the transition for Pegues, breaking down the complexities of playing defense. Although Pegues initially had to convince himself that the move was the right decision, it ultimately paid off. After transferring to Ole Miss following his sophomore year at Auburn, he became a key contributor on the Rebels’ defensive line, recording at least three sacks in each of the last three seasons. To make the transition, Pegues added significant weight, going from 285 pounds in high school to 323 pounds.
Pegues’ versatility extends beyond defense. He expressed openness to playing offense in the NFL if a team asks, noting that some teams have discussed a hybrid role as a potential fullback. At the Combine, he participated in drills for fullback, tight end, and defensive line. He also had an informal meeting with the Steelers, where his role would likely focus on defense. Given Pittsburgh’s emphasis on defensive linemen batting down passes, Pegues could be a valuable asset in creating turnovers.
One of his standout moments came at the 2025 East-West Shrine Bowl, where he made a one-handed interception. “I was rushing as a shade, trying to bat the ball down, and it just stuck to my hand,” Pegues said, crediting his offensive background for the play.
Pegues believes his defensive versatility is his greatest strength. At Ole Miss, he was utilized in various roles, from playing 0-tech against centers to penetrating the backfield. While his offensive experience makes him an intriguing prospect, his potential as a defensive lineman alone is enough to make an impact at the next level. His relatively short time on defense means there’s still room for growth, and his physical tools make him a moldable prospect for any team.
With the Steelers in need of defensive line help and the possibility of drafting multiple players at the position, JJ Pegues is a name to watch throughout the draft process. His unique blend of skills and versatility could make him a valuable addition to any NFL roster.
