The Tennessee Volunteers are heading into their fifth season under head coach Josh Heupel, and according to sources within the NFL, the program’s future looks incredibly bright.
Before Heupel arrived in 2021, the Vols averaged just 7.5 wins per season for nearly two decades, often struggling to find consistency in the competitive SEC. However, under Heupel’s leadership, Tennessee has undergone a dramatic transformation, evolving from a middle-of-the-pack SEC team to a perennial College Football Playoff contender.
Fresh off their first-ever College Football Playoff appearance—despite a disappointing finish—the Vols are poised for another strong season. They return one of the nation’s top quarterbacks in Nico Iamaleava, and Heupel’s offensive system ensures they’ll continue to dominate on the ground. Simply put, Tennessee has established a standard of excellence in Knoxville, something that had been missing for years.
This resurgence hasn’t gone unnoticed. NFL executives and coaches have taken note of the Vols’ progress, both in their win-loss record and their overall program development. During the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, one NFL coach told Vols on SI, “That program, for the first time in a long time, is smart. They aren’t cutting any corners. For years, that fan base has been a circular firing squad to their own detriment. But this new leadership and coaching regime is building something special. They’re making smart moves and developing players. It’s a crime against college football when Tennessee doesn’t have talent and coaching, and they finally have both on Rocky Top. This program needed discipline, and Josh provides it.”
With Heupel at the helm, Tennessee is no longer just a storied program from the past—it’s a rising powerhouse with a bright future. The Vols are back, and the college football world is taking notice.
