Giants Draft Cam Skattebo — and Might’ve Just Blown Up the Ravens’ Backup Plan for Derrick Henry
The New York Giants may have boosted their own backfield by drafting Cam Skattebo, but in doing so, they may have unknowingly made life a lot harder for the Baltimore Ravens.
Baltimore is currently locked in a quiet, high-stakes contract standoff with star running back Derrick Henry, who’s entering the final year of his deal. After racking up over 2,100 scrimmage yards and 18 touchdowns last season, Henry has every reason to push for a major extension. And while the Ravens have shown interest in keeping him, they’ve also been keeping a bit of leverage in their back pocket… until now.
By grabbing Skattebo early in Round 4, the Giants might’ve eliminated one of the few realistic fallback options the Ravens had. No, Skattebo isn’t a carbon copy of Henry—he’s shorter and lighter—but his bruising, no-nonsense running style was the closest thing to Henry’s physical brand of football in this draft.

Baltimore was never openly chasing Skattebo, but with him off the board, their emergency Plan B just vanished. The remaining backs in the draft don’t offer the same punishing style—and now the Ravens have no obvious young, affordable insurance if contract talks with Henry stall.
Add in the fact that Saquon Barkley just raised the bar with his massive deal in Philadelphia, and Henry’s camp suddenly has all the negotiating power. Thanks to the Giants, Baltimore might end up paying a lot more to keep their star than they ever intended.
Intentionally or not, New York just gave Derrick Henry’s agents a major assist.
