The Minnesota Vikings took a strategic approach to rebuild their quarterback room after the departures of Sam Darnold to the Seattle Seahawks, Daniel Jones to the Indianapolis Colts, and Nick Mullens to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
With just one year as a starter, Howell is expected to serve as QB2 behind McCarthy.
However, the Vikings still needed an additional quarterback for offseason activities and found one quickly. Just hours after the draft, they signed 19 undrafted rookie free agents, including Max Brosmer, a quarterback from the Minnesota Golden Gophers. The 24-year-old earned a notable contract with $250,000 in guarantees, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Brosmer, who transferred from New Hampshire after leading the FCS in passing yards, played only one season at Minnesota but set a program record with 268 completions in 2024. He passed for 2,828 yards, 18 touchdowns, and six interceptions, boasting a 66.5% completion rate.
Brosmer excels at threading passes over the middle, which is a key area of Kevin O’Connell’s offensive system. Known for his accuracy and anticipation in the intermediate range, he delivers quick throws with a tight spiral into narrow windows. However, his deep passing is inconsistent, and he often forces receivers to adjust to his throws. According to Dane Brugler of The Athletic, while Brosmer struggles outside the pocket, his intelligence and drive make him a promising candidate for a backup role in the NFL.
Brosmer joins Brett Rypien at the bottom of the Vikings’ quarterback depth chart, which now includes four quarterbacks heading into the May minicamps. There’s a realistic chance for him to compete for a roster spot during the summer.
McCarthy, who turned 22 in January, remains the youngest quarterback on the team.
