JUST-IN: Blockbuster Trade Brewing? Yankees Trade Idea Lands Diamondbacks Power-Hitting $66M Third Baseman Slugger in Deadline Stunner

The New York Yankees boast one of the most well-rounded rosters in Major League Baseball, particularly in the outfield with stars like Aaron Judge, Trent Grisham, and Cody Bellinger. However, their infield still has room for improvement.

While first base, second base, and shortstop are already set, third base remains an area where the Yankees could upgrade. One potential trade target is Eugenio Suarez of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Recent moves by the Diamondbacks suggest Suarez might be available. As noted by Stephen Parello in Yanks Go Yard, Arizona has promoted top prospect Jordan Lawlar after he excelled in Triple-A with a .336/.413/.579 slash line. Although Lawlar is primarily a shortstop, he can also handle second and third base. With Ketel Marte and Geraldo Perdomo entrenched in the middle infield, third base presents the clearest path for Lawlar to see regular playing time.

Currently, Suarez holds down third base for Arizona, which could prompt the team to deal him and make room for Lawlar. Parello points out that third base is likely Lawlar’s long-term position, and trading Suarez—who’s not expected to be re-signed—would allow Arizona to get something in return before his contract expires.

D-backs pick up Eugenio Suárez's option for 2025

Suarez is in the final year of a seven-year, $66 million deal and is earning $15 million this season. His expiring contract and the Diamondbacks’ future plans make him a viable trade candidate.

For the Yankees, Suarez would be a low-cost, high-value acquisition. He’s been remarkably durable, playing in at least 143 games every year since 2016, except for the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. Following Oswaldo Cabrera’s season-ending injury, New York’s current third base options—Jorbit Vivas, DJ LeMahieu, and Oswald Peraza—leave room for improvement.

Suarez’s offensive production in 2025 has been strong, with 14 home runs, 39 hits, 30 runs, nine doubles, and 38 RBIs in 178 at-bats. He’s posted a .506 slugging percentage and an .813 OPS. Over his career, Suarez has amassed 290 home runs and 1,339 hits with a .459 slugging percentage, making him one of the most consistent power-hitting third basemen of the last decade.

Acquiring Suarez would solidify the Yankees’ infield through the end of the 2025 season without impacting future plans, while giving a significant boost to what is already considered the most potent offense in the league.
