The Boston Bruins are expected to undergo significant changes this offseason after missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs and finishing tied for last place with the Philadelphia Flyers.
In the final weeks of the season, one player made his frustration known on his way out the door. Goalie Joonas Korpisalo subtly criticized both the coaching staff and the front office, expressing dissatisfaction with his playing time during the 2024-25 season.
At the Bruins’ end-of-season press conference, GM Don Sweeney briefly mentioned Korpisalo, but it was unclear why he felt the goalie deserved more starts this year. However, a report about Korpisalo’s future in Boston sheds light on the situation, making it clear that his discontent was more than just a passing frustration.
Korpisalo’s Agent Delivers Strong Message to Bruins GM
According to Jimmy Murphy of RG Media, Korpisalo’s agent, Markus Lehto, has told Sweeney that if the Bruins don’t plan to give his client more starts next season, Korpisalo would welcome a trade. Although Korpisalo showed improvement in 2024-25, posting an 11-10-3 record with a 2.90 GAA and .893 SV%, along with three shutouts, his numbers were still a step down from his previous season with Ottawa.
In his last year with the Senators before being traded to the Bruins in June as part of the Linus Ullmark deal, Korpisalo went 21-26-4 with a 3.27 GAA and a .890 SV%. While his performance under Bruins goalie coach Bob Essensa was better, it’s unlikely he’ll see more playing time, especially after the team gave Jeremy Swayman a new contract last October.
Regardless of the situation, the Bruins are expected to stick with Swayman as their primary goalie next season. Moving Korpisalo this summer would make sense, both to clear cap space and to open a backup role for a cheaper option, like Michael DiPietro or Brandon Bussi.
Korpisalo’s comments and his agent’s subsequent message have set the stage for a potential trade. The ball is now in Sweeney’s court, and he will make the final decision.
