JUST-IN: Canucks Lose Top Coaching Finalist to Rival Bruins in Shocking Twist He’s Reportedly Taking Over in Boston As New Head Coach

With the Vancouver Canucks opting to promote Adam Foote as their new head coach following Rick Tocchet’s departure, other top contenders for the position are already being scooped up elsewhere.

According to reports, one such candidate — former Canucks forward Marco Sturm — is now set to join the Boston Bruins. Cam Robinson of EliteProspects reported Monday night that the 46-year-old Sturm is expected to take over as Boston’s next head coach, replacing the recently fired Jim Montgomery and interim bench boss Joe Sacco.

Sturm has been developing his coaching résumé within the Los Angeles Kings organization for the past seven seasons. He spent four years as an assistant at the NHL level before taking the reins as head coach of their AHL affiliate, the Ontario Reign, over the last three seasons.

Are Canucks considering former NHLer Marco Sturm as next head coach?

Now, after years of honing his craft in assistant and developmental roles, Sturm appears to be getting his long-awaited NHL head coaching opportunity — though not in Vancouver.

The Canucks instead chose the more familiar but less experienced Foote, aiming to maintain internal continuity. Some believe the decision may also be tied to efforts to persuade team captain Quinn Hughes to remain with the franchise beyond 2027, making it a calculated gamble with long-term implications.
