Derek Forbort is set to remain with the Vancouver Canucks for the upcoming season.
The team confirmed on Tuesday that they have signed the defenseman to a one-year contract extension worth $2 million.
“Bringing Derek back is a key move for our roster,” said Canucks GM Patrik Allvin in an official statement. “His reliable defensive play and effectiveness on the penalty kill helped stabilize our defense last year. Derek also brings strong leadership and a commanding presence in the locker room. We expect him to play a vital role in helping our team continue to develop and improve this season.”
Forbort joined Vancouver last summer via free agency after spending three years with the Boston Bruins. During his first season with the Canucks, he played in 54 games, contributing 11 points, 45 penalty minutes, and averaging just over 17 minutes of ice time per game.
In October, Forbort briefly took time away from the team following the death of his father. He also missed time due to an undisclosed injury.
His final season with Boston was challenging. While he remained a reliable penalty killer, Forbort faced injuries and inconsistency throughout the 2023-24 campaign. After returning from long-term injured reserve in February 2024, he struggled to regain his form but stayed in the lineup.
He then dealt with additional injuries that kept him out until the second round of the playoffs against the Florida Panthers. After Boston’s elimination, Forbort disclosed he had undergone surgery on both groins and a thumb ligament repair before returning for the postseason.
Over 165 games with the Bruins, Forbort recorded 30 points.
