Alex Verdugo’s Return to the Majors Could Be Just Days Away
Former Yankees outfielder Alex Verdugo might be on the verge of a return to the big leagues—something social media has been buzzing about for weeks. After recently signing a minor league deal with the Atlanta Braves, the 28-year-old could be back in MLB action within days.
The Braves, off to a disappointing 4-11 start, are in dire need of help in the outfield—and Verdugo might be just the bat they need. On Sunday, he left Triple-A Gwinnett’s game early, fueling speculation. According to The Athletic’s Dave O’Brien, “all signs point to Verdugo joining the Braves this week,” either during their series in Toronto or when they return home to face the Twins on Friday.
Verdugo hasn’t exactly lit it up in Triple-A—he’s 4-for-22 with two home runs—but the struggling Braves will gladly take a chance on a veteran with proven big-league experience.
Despite a rough 2023 season with the Yankees (.233 AVG, 13 HR, .647 OPS), Verdugo brings versatility and a decent on-base ability (.328 career OBP) that could make him a worthwhile gamble. The fact that it took him this long to sign surprised many around the league.
Most Yankees fans weren’t sad to see him go after one season in the Bronx, and his numbers in the second half (.228 AVG, .606 OPS) didn’t help his case. Still, as a left-handed hitter who can play all three outfield positions, Verdugo remains a potential bounce-back candidate.
But the key word is potential. If the Braves get the slumping version of Verdugo, his stint in Atlanta might be short-lived.
