JUST-IN; From Slump to Surge: Braves Fans Erupt After Verdugo Sparks Offense — Is This the Turning Point?

The Atlanta Braves have been slowly digging themselves out of the early-season slump that plagued the start of their 2025 campaign. Battling through injuries and inconsistent performances both on the mound and at the plate, wins were hard to come by.

But things seem to be turning around. Between April 18 and April 21, the Braves strung together an impressive four-game winning streak — a rare feat this season. Though the Cardinals ended the streak on April 22, the Braves quickly bounced back, securing a win against them and another over the Arizona Diamondbacks on April 25. This recent success is less about luck and more about the team making key improvements.

On April 25, Atlanta answered fans’ ongoing frustration about runners being left stranded by coming through in the clutch — specifically in the eighth inning, where they plated three of their eight total runs, sealing the deal before Arizona could mount a comeback.

Their momentum has been boosted by smart roster decisions and gradual recovery for critical players. A prime example: when AJ Smith-Shawver was sent down to Triple-A instead of Bryce Elder, many fans were puzzled. But Elder proved the decision right, rebounding from a rough first inning on April 23 to throw five scoreless innings, giving the Braves time to rally.

Another bright spot has been Alex Verdugo, who has energized the offense since joining the team on April 20. While Verdugo credits his teammates rather than taking personal praise, he acknowledged the improved quality of their at-bats.

“These guys have been out there working hard this year,” he said. “I think you’re starting to see a lot better at-bats from certain guys.” Performances like Elder’s and a renewed focus at the plate are giving Atlanta the boost it needs. That once-distant .500 record now feels firmly within reach.
