Bruins’ Deadline Fire Sale Ends in Stanley Cup Glory — But Oilers May Regret This Massive Contract Move
When Boston Bruins GM Don Sweeney initiated a roster purge at the 2025 NHL trade deadline, few expected it to result in a Stanley Cup win — just not for Boston. Regardless of the outcome, one thing was guaranteed before the Final even began: a former Bruin would be hoisting the Cup.
That former Bruin turned out to be Brad Marchand, who helped lead the Florida Panthers to a 5-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers in Game 6 on Tuesday night. On the losing side? Trent Frederic, his former teammate, now with Edmonton after being traded there in a three-team deal just before the March 7 deadline — even though Frederic was injured at the time.
Though he only played one regular-season game for the Oilers, Frederic suited up for 22 playoff games, notching a goal and three assists. He did what he’s known for: bringing grit, enforcing physicality, and letting the stars carry the offense. But just a day after their Cup dreams ended, Edmonton is making a move that could haunt them.
Oilers Reportedly Finalizing Shocking 8-Year Deal with Frederic
According to Andy Strickland, the Oilers and Frederic are close to agreeing on a staggering eight-year contract extension worth $4 million annually. It’s a decision that could seriously backfire for GM Stan Bowman and the organization.
Frederic, 27, had a career year in 2023–24, scoring 18 goals and adding 22 assists — his best numbers to date. But even with that spike in production, there’s reason for concern: Frederic hasn’t proven he can deliver consistent output season after season.
Drafted 29th overall in 2016 — a controversial pick at the time — Frederic never quite lived up to the expectations of a first-round selection. While he fills a role in the bottom six, committing $32 million over eight years for that role player is a high-risk gamble.
If this rumored deal goes through, Edmonton may soon find themselves stuck with an overpaid grinder on a long-term deal, tying up cap space they may desperately need down the road.
