JUST-IN: From Trade Throw-In to Fan Favorite: “This Unsung Grinder Unexpected Hero Just Secured His Place in the Bruins’ Future” — No One Saw This Coming

When the Boston Bruins traded goaltender Linus Ullmark to the Ottawa Senators, the return package initially came with more questions than answers. From a broad perspective, many Bruins fans felt the return didn’t quite match the value of a former Vezina Trophy winner.

In exchange, Boston received goalie Joonas Korpisalo, forward Mark Kastelic, and a first-round pick. After one season, Korpisalo exceeded expectations in limited appearances, and Kastelic fit smoothly into the Bruins’ lineup. Early in the season, he was part of one of Boston’s most effective lines.

Mark Kastelic’s Performance
Although the Bruins stumbled out of the gate, their fourth line stood out, contributing timely goals. Kastelic, alongside John Beecher and Cole Koepke, injected energy and produced offensively. While the line’s early success eventually tapered off, Kastelic emerged as a valuable piece in the Ullmark trade. Before an injury sidelined him for the final month, he appeared in 61 games, tallying five goals and nine assists. Known for his gritty style, he quickly won over fans in Boston.

Looking Ahead
Kastelic is expected to be a regular presence in the lineup over the coming seasons, thanks to a three-year, $4.7 million contract extension signed in January, carrying a team-friendly $1.56 million AAV. It’s a smart deal for GM Don Sweeney.

With major roster changes likely on the horizon this offseason, Sweeney faces the tough task of reshaping the team to return to the playoffs. The bottom-six forward group is one area due for an overhaul, but Kastelic is firmly entrenched on the fourth line and will play a key role—health permitting.
