JUST-IN: Giants Confirms Shocking U-Turn on Top Experience WR in Bizarre Roster Shuffle And 3 More Moves Announced

Giants Make Roster Changes, Re-Sign Lil’Jordan Humphrey in Unusual Move

On May 12, the New York Giants made four roster moves, according to team reporter Dan Salomone. Among them was a surprising decision involving wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey.

Following rookie minicamp, the Giants signed undrafted rookie cornerback T.J. Moore, who had been participating on a tryout basis. Additionally, they brought back Humphrey just three days after initially cutting him—an unexpected twist considering he was a recent free-agent acquisition.

Humphrey’s initial release on May 9 was seen as puzzling, as the team had only signed him a few months earlier. Alongside the additions, the Giants also officially waived two undrafted rookie defensive backs: Tommy McCormick (Idaho) and RJ Delancy III (Wisconsin), both of whom had signed shortly after the NFL Draft.

Humphrey’s Brief Exit and Quick Return Raises Eyebrows

While it’s common for NFL teams to make late-summer roster adjustments with veterans who aren’t subject to waivers, doing so in May is out of the ordinary. The Athletic’s Dan Duggan pointed out that such roster shuffling isn’t typical with a 90-man offseason roster, calling the situation “unusual.”

Humphrey, a vested veteran, did not need to pass through waivers to be re-signed. However, bouncing a new signee on and off the roster this early in his tenure seems questionable. The 27-year-old began his career with the New Orleans Saints in 2019 and later had brief stints with the Patriots and Broncos. He joined the Giants this offseason after logging 455 receiving yards and 4 touchdowns over two seasons in Denver.

Although Humphrey brings NFL experience, he doesn’t contribute significantly on special teams, and the Giants’ receiver room is already quite full. He’ll need an impressive training camp to make the final 53-man roster.

New CB T.J. Moore Brings Strong Credentials from FCS

Salomone also highlighted the credentials of newly signed CB T.J. Moore. The 6-foot, 187-pound defender was only the second unanimous All-American in Mercer University’s football history and was the runner-up for the Buck Buchanan Award, honoring the top defensive player in FCS football.

Moore started all 14 games last season, tallying 64 tackles (42 solo), seven interceptions, and 13 pass breakups. He recorded at least five tackles in seven games and had a standout performance against Alabama with nine tackles. He also set a school record with three interceptions in a single game against Princeton.

With open competition for depth spots in the Giants’ secondary, Moore could push for a roster or practice squad spot this summer.
