The New York Giants addressed several needs in the 2025 NFL Draft but waited until the seventh round to select a cornerback. That delay made their move in free agency more logical, as they landed a defensive standout at a critical position.
According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Giants secured a deal with South Carolina cornerback O’Donnell Fortune as an undrafted free agent, outpacing “a number of teams” also vying for his signature. Fortune took his time with the decision, telling WPRI 12’s Mike Uva that he’d been considering the offer since Saturday before making his choice.
Fortune becomes the third rookie defensive back added by the Giants this offseason, joining Korie Black, who was taken with the 246th pick on Day 3 of the draft, as part of the team’s push to reinforce the secondary.
Although his strong showing at the East-West Shrine Bowl wasn’t enough to get him drafted, Fortune’s post-draft interest shows teams recognized his potential. He adds physicality and instinct to a Giants cornerback group that still faces uncertainty.
Fortune made his mark with aggressive, high-impact play, including a memorable pick-six. Giants defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, who served as the West team’s head coach at the Shrine Bowl, likely had a close look at Fortune’s skill set. Bowen would’ve seen a tough, downhill defender with a knack for hitting in space.
ESPN’s Mina Kimes praised Fortune’s performance against Alabama, calling him “a bit slight but with great instincts, ball skills, and legit closing speed.” It’s that physical, aggressive play that could give Fortune a real shot at making the Giants’ roster.
