After a disappointing 3-14 season, the New York Giants have overhauled their roster—and now, changes are coming to the coaching staff as well. These adjustments could significantly impact head coach Brian Daboll and the team’s offensive strategy.
In 2024, Daboll had taken over play-calling duties from offensive coordinator Mike Kafka. However, at the team’s OTAs on Wednesday, May 28, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reported that Kafka was once again relaying offensive plays, suggesting he’s back in charge of calling plays. This shift could be a major boost for the Giants, as Kafka was at the helm of the offense during their 2022 playoff run, when quarterback Daniel Jones had the best season of his career.
Kafka’s renewed influence is especially important now, with the Giants relying on new quarterbacks—10-time Pro Bowler Russell Wilson and 2025 draft pick Jaxson Dart. Both participated in a structured rotation at practice, but every quarterback will benefit from clear direction. Kafka being involved early could help solidify the team’s offensive identity.
Daboll’s stint as the primary play-caller didn’t yield results, with the Giants ranking 31st in points and 30th in total yardage, according to Pro Football Reference. While injuries and underwhelming quarterback play were factors, the offense lacked Kafka’s presence and play-design expertise.

Reinstating Kafka as the play-caller is a move that many observers had been hoping for. It also puts Kafka in a prime position to guide Dart’s development—something that could be risky for Daboll, who needs Dart to progress quickly, much like Josh Allen did under his previous coaching in Buffalo.
By entrusting Kafka again, Daboll appears to be stepping back from micromanaging and focusing more on his overall head coaching responsibilities. As Giants Nation Show host Bobby Skinner noted, this structure lets Daboll maintain his offensive philosophy while delegating more effectively. Skinner also praised Kafka’s creativity, especially how he disguises tendencies and builds plays off the run game.
