It might be too soon to say for certain, but the New York Giants restructuring Brian Burns’ contract could be the first sign that a trade is on the horizon before the 2025 season kicks off.
According to reports, the Giants are tweaking Burns’ deal to free up cap space, likely to make room for first-round pick Abdul Carter. With new additions like Chauncey Golston and the presence of Kayvon Thibodeaux—who’s also been the subject of trade rumors—Burns may already be considered expendable.
While having depth at linebacker is a good problem, the Giants may not be able to afford all their pass-rushers long-term. Burns, a former first-rounder out of Florida State, arrived in New York via trade from the Panthers and signed a $141 million contract last offseason. He had a solid debut year, posting 8.5 sacks and earning a 79.2 PFF grade.
However, with the Giants exercising Thibodeaux’s fifth-year option and planning for the future, Burns might not fit into their long-term plans—despite his ongoing production.
If the Giants decide to shop him, Burns could command significant draft capital, and there are already a few teams likely to make a strong push if he hits the trade block.
