Somewhere, far from the bitter winds of the Tri-State Area and free from the weight of realistic expectations, there may be a powerful New York Giants fan channeling an almost divine level of influence over the football world. In the NFL, star quarterbacks don’t typically request trades from Super Bowl contenders.
They certainly don’t force their way to struggling teams mired in incompetence. And yet, the New York Giants’ growing pursuit of Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford has gone from a fleeting rumor to one of the most talked-about possibilities of the offseason. What began as a light-hearted suggestion from Gotham Sports Network’s Ethan Levy is gaining traction, with credible insiders starting to take it seriously.
The momentum surrounding this potential move intensified on Tuesday when NFL analyst Daniel Jeremiah added more fuel to the fire with his latest mock draft, which teased a potential Stafford-to-Giants trade. In this scenario, New York, holding the No. 3 pick, passed on quarterback Shedeur Sanders—who many expect the Giants to covet—to select Travis Hunter, a dynamic receiver/cornerback from Colorado. Jeremiah noted, “The Giants do their best to make up for letting Saquon Barkley walk in free agency last year by adding a dynamic two-way player in Hunter.”

While selecting Hunter in this mock draft has been a popular alternative to taking a quarterback, the assumption has always been that Sanders—whom the Giants are rumored to favor—would have already been off the board. Instead, Sanders remained available and was chosen three picks later by the Las Vegas Raiders, raising questions about whether the Giants might pivot toward Stafford after all.
This shift in focus—one that previously seemed outlandish—is now gaining legitimacy as insiders and analysts continue to fuel speculation. If the Giants do indeed pull off a trade for Stafford, it could dramatically reshape the team’s future and impact the direction of the upcoming draft. What began as a mere whisper has now evolved into a storyline that no one in the NFL offseason can afford to ignore.
