The Minnesota Vikings are aiming to strengthen their roster and climb to the top of the NFC, and they plan to be active in NFL free agency. With Sam Darnold likely on his way out, the team is in search of a new quarterback.
While J.J. McCarthy shows promise, he doesn’t appear ready to start just yet, making the addition of a veteran quarterback to serve as a bridge ideal for the Vikings. After addressing their quarterback situation, Minnesota will turn its focus to improving their defense, particularly the defensive line, where they need additional help.
The Vikings are preparing for a key meeting to kick off free agency. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler and Kevin Seifert, the Vikings are set to meet with free-agent defensive lineman Jonathan Allen, who was recently released by the Washington Commanders.

As reported by Jeremy Fowler, free agent DT Jonathan Allen plans to visit the Vikings. Allen and Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell previously worked together in Washington when O’Connell was an assistant coach,” Seifert wrote. Adam Schefter also confirmed that the meeting will take place today.
Adding Allen would be a significant boost to the Vikings’ defense, as he would be a strong fit in Brian Flores’ system. His connection with O’Connell could also play a role in the decision. During the 2024 season with the Commanders, Allen played in just eight games, recording 19 tackles and three sacks. In 2023, he played 16 games, totaling 53 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and one defended pass.
