The New York Yankees’ injury list is growing at an alarming rate, with the latest setbacks coming on Monday. Third baseman D.J. LeMahieu is now dealing with a calf issue, while starting pitcher Luis Gil is sidelined with a lat strain.

These injuries add to an already challenging situation, especially with the departure of longtime second baseman Gleyber Torres, who signed with the Detroit Tigers this offseason. Sherman’s idea involves acquiring Luis Rengifo, a six-year veteran who posted a solid .763 OPS last season, to provide a short-term solution. In return, the Yankees would send outfielder Trent Grisham, who just returned from his own injury this week, to the Los Angeles Angels.

Along with Grisham, New York would ship 29-year-old right-handed pitcher Ian Hamilton, who recorded a respectable 3.82 ERA and 41 strikeouts over 37.2 innings in the Yankees’ bullpen last season, and either shortstop Oswald Peraza or pitching prospect Yoendrys Gomez. The trade would be financially balanced, with Grisham earning $5 million on a one-year deal and Rengifo owed $5.95 million in 2025.

But why would the Angels consider this trade? Sherman points out that Rengifo is set to become a free agent after this season, and the Angels have already secured Yoan Moncada to play third base.

Additionally, the Angels have a history of promoting their first-round draft picks rapidly, as seen with their quick call-ups of 2022 first-round pick Zach Neto and 2023 first-rounder Nolan Schanuel. With this aggressive strategy, the Angels may be looking to add more young talent to their roster, making Rengifo expendable.
