The New York Yankees’ acquisition of Cody Bellinger all but seals the fate of Alex Verdugo, indicating that he is likely to play for a new team in 2025. While Verdugo’s market has been relatively quiet so far, there is growing speculation that the Miami Marlins could be an ideal landing spot for the outfielder. However, another National League team that could provide Verdugo with the opportunity he’s seeking is the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Pirates are an up-and-coming team in the NL, and general manager Ben Cherington faces mounting pressure to build a competitive squad around young pitcher Paul Skenes. Verdugo could be a key piece in this effort, offering a solid option in left field while shifting Bryan Reynolds to right field, strengthening the Pirates’ overall outfield defense.
Verdugo is currently valued at an average annual salary of around $15 million, but that figure may not be an obstacle for the Pirates, especially after they saved money at first base with their acquisition of Spencer Horwitz. This trade has given Cherington significant payroll flexibility, allowing him to consider adding a player like Verdugo.
Alex Verdugo
Last season, Verdugo posted a .233 batting average, with 13 home runs and 61 RBIs while playing for the Yankees. Although PNC Park is known for being a pitcher-friendly ballpark, left-handed hitters tend to fare better in Pittsburgh. This could work to Verdugo’s advantage, as seen in the success of previous left-handed hitters like Pedro Alvarez, Oneil Cruz, and Gregory Polanco.
Given that Verdugo had a down year in 2023, there is a possibility that he could sign for a lower annual salary than his typical market value. If he is available for less than the expected $15 million per year, the Pirates would have even more reason to pursue him. By placing Verdugo in left field and moving Reynolds to right, the Pirates would strengthen their outfield defense, complementing Cruz in center and enhancing their overall team dynamic.
